Posted: 22 June 2004

Faktion is:
Ryan Gibbs, Vocals
Marshal Dutton, Guitars
Josh Franklin, Guitars
Jeremy Coan, Bass
Jeremy Moore, Drums

So, have you heard of Faktion yet? If you haven't, you will soon. I promise that, and I don't mean hearing about them through this website. A five-piece out of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Faktion brings to the table a beautiful mix of styles--melodic vocals, stunning lyrics, and arresting harmony thrown together with aggressive screams, punishing guitar riffs and an assertive drum beat. You can sample three songs on the band's website, where you can also purchase the very 3-song EP you just sampled as well as purchase their 5-song EP "Make A Dent".

I caught up with Faktion drummer, Jeremy, and got to ask him a little about the band and what to expect in the future:

TuneLab Music: Ok, first off, can you describe what Faktion is and describe the music a little?

Jeremy: Faktion is a brotherhood. Through the music and the band, we have grown so close and feel that inspires the music to an even greater extent. Faktion is also each and every one of our fans, family and friends. Of course, the definition is a group of people forming a minority within a larger group of people. We are doing what we can to grow each and every day. Everyone is a part of Faktion. Not just the 5 of us. The music is hard to explain. I like to say we are pretty versatile. Some songs will rock your balls off, but the next could bring a tear to your eye. (say going from "Forgive Me" to "Distance") But we mainly stick with "heavy melodic"… We like to have balls and melody in each of our songs.

You guys have released a 5-song EP entitled "Make A Dent" and just this month released another 3-song EP. Any plans for a full-length album?

If there is ever a full length, we hope it to be released and paid for by a major label one day. We never have the amount of money to pay for a full length. We can only do a few at a time.

Are you currently seeking a major-label deal? Or are you guys content to keep things the way they are right now?

We are seeking any major label recognition. Our management team at MSK [MuSiKgroup] is working on that for us.

What's the music scene like in the Dallas/Fort Worth area?

It's actually pretty good compared to some of the local scenes we've seen with what little traveling we do. There are hundreds of bands and a good music club district.

Do you guys have a pretty steady fanbase in the area?

Yes and its rapidly growing... this summer we are doing what we can to build our fanbase regionally.

Can you describe a typical Faktion show?

Pure energy within the band and the crowd as well.... a huge party but still in a professional sort of way. The music is still solid.

Any tour plans on the horizon?

I wish, I think we are going to hop on a few stops with Edgewater when they get their regional tour together but other than that, we are mainly writing and playing shows on the weekends. We are going back to Orlando to record with Justin Thomas and Brett Hestla again in August.

What's the writing process like for Faktion?

It's usually all collaborative. One person has an idea, we all play in the jamroom and build on it. Every once in a while, someone brings in a song pretty much put together but we all add what we can and build on it.

Alright bro, that's about all I got, any final words of wisdom?

Uuummm… be cool, stay in school? And support local music.
