Interview With Shaun Glass of SOiL
Posted: 30 August 2005
Contributed By: Chris

SOiL is:
A.J. Cavalier (vocals)
Adam Zadel (guitar, backing vox)
Shaun Glass (guitar)
Tim King (bass)
Tom Schofield (drums)

SOiL's Shaun Glass was kind enough to answer some questions from TL's own news guru Chris. SOiL is excited to be working with new vocalist A.J. Cavalier and will be putting out a new album in early 2006 on a soon-to-be announced label.

TuneLab Music: What's new with SOiL? Can you give us an idea of where you guys are at and what the immediate future holds?

Shaun Glass: We have just finished the writing and have about 22 songs to choose from for the new album which we will be recording in by the end of September. And yes we will announce our new home for SOiL soon!

TL: Are you playing any of the new material live? If so, how are the crowds reacting and does that play into what gets chosen to go on the album?

SG: YES! We just did a show in Florida Saturday and four new songs made this set list. They all dig them a lot, and really dig "Pick Me Up." As for what makes the album, we know what will pace the album right and the vibe overall for the new chapter!

TL: SOiL was the first, and really only, hard rock band signed to J Records. Did you guys ever feel out of place there?

SG: 100%. When you have no place at a label with all urban acts, it is obvious that we were the alien on a strange planet. J Records is good at one thing: POP music.

TL: The last two albums, 'Scars' & 'Redefine,' were both solid albums, but never got the push they needed from the label. After being released from J, did the band ever consider calling it quits?

SG: NEVER. We knew we love what we do and have too many fans to stop now; that is why we want to be on a label that has rock/metal bands. It is important from press to radio to work with people who LISTEN to this genre and not jump in their BMWs blasting P. Diddy.

TL: The most noticeable difference about the new album will be the addition of vocalist A.J Cavalier. What made A.J stand out from the rest of the guys that auditioned?

SG: He slays! And he is into MUSIC, not in it JUST for money and attention. He really gels with us and has such a strong presence both live and as a writer with our sound. He really is a great down -to-earth guy.

TL: How will the new music differ from your previous work?

SG: There will be some new twists. Tom has some bad-ass double bass on a few songs and Adam is showing his lead skills more and A.J. can deliver it all from the heavy intense stuff to the soulful melodic vibe. It really is going to be tough to pick what does make the final album since we have so many strong songs to pick from.

TL: On past tours, you've hooked up with Ozzy, Shinedown, Static-X, and Sevendust among others. What kind of impact have these tours had on your sound?

SG: All have helped us a lot, and all the bands you mention we look at as bros and mentors. I can't wait to hear new Sevendust, as they always deliver the goods.

TL: The last two albums were produced by Johnny K. Will you guys be working with him on the next album?

SG: Johhny K. and us did produce two solid albums, but we feel it is time to move on. I think any band who does all of their albums with the same person are cheating themselves of growth. Like in the death metal days bands who just used ONE guy to get THAT sound, I never agreed with that. An album should be like a point of time captured and this is what were going to achieve on the new SOiL album.

TL: When can we expect a new SOiL album?

SG: Early 2006!!!
