Slipknot’s Clown Compares Band’s Music To Vietnam

Posted on May 30th, 2008 by Mikel

Slipknot’s percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan recently sat down with MTV in what turned out to be a very narcissistic interview, check out some highlights below:

It’s a bunch of bands opening for Slipknot,” Crahan said about the band’s upcoming Rockstar Mayhem Tour. “We’re headlining, as it should be. Sorry — it’s a Slipknot show, kids. We’ve been gone for two years, and you’ve all had the chance to do what you’re going to do. But now we’re back; step in line. That’s what’s up. We’re the DNA that keeps whatever cell this is moving. Period.

With me, I’ve been out with a lot of bands, and I don’t care,” he continued. “We’re back, and it just happens to be this thing called the Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival. That’s cool. But we didn’t want them, they wanted us. Everyone wants our f—ing money and our kids. We’re playing a show, and a bunch of great bands are playing too. But we’re back, so get out of our way. Call it what you will, but we’re headlining. It’s our show, and we’re here to kill you.

The egotism continues below:

We’re going to cast some magical spells, and you’re going to get more than you can choke on,” he said. “Slipknot is a philosophy, a way of life. We’re a great band, and if you don’t know that, I don’t know what you know. We’ve been doing it longer than most bands can, and no one has done it harder than us.

I’m not that guy who’s going to tell you it’s harder,” he said. “Harder, to me, doesn’t mean anything. I could give a sh– about hard. Hard means nothing to the Clown. Slipknot is a phenomenon, it’s an enigma, and the enigma weighs on your emotions. And the emotions aren’t just heavy, they’re cerebral, they’re surreal and they’re on a whole other level. I just know that this album is different than anything we’ve done.

Listen, we are the hardest ever,” he said. “We blow all bands away. I don’t give a f— who your band is. I’ve probably played with your band, and you don’t show me sh–. So, it’s like, is this band heavy? Oh, yeah, we’re the heaviest. We’re heavy thinkers, heavy hitters, heavy writers and heavy people, but it’s emotionally heavy. There’s a lot of emotion on this record, and we’re all on the same page with our own emotions, so you’re finally seeing the kings of all the courts bringing their kingdom’s jewels in for one gigantic war.

It’s a record made by a bunch of f—ing adults, and that’s why it’s different. Every record should be different,” Crahan said. “Our self-titled came out in ‘98, and the second record, people were thinking maybe we’d give ‘em more commerciality, and give in like everybody else does. But instead, we go completely against that, and we made the anti-sophomore record, and we get all the respect for that.

The third record was, ‘Now, I’m in your brain. Check out this other sh–. No other band can handle this. No one can fathom what we do. This fourth record was done by a bunch of crazy guys in their 30s. That doesn’t mean we’re slowing down or not as intense — our brains are different, so we’re bringing different emotions, different feelings and different anxieties to the table now. This record is another diagnosis of our insanity.

“No one has done what we have done,” he added. “This is a war, man. The sh– that we do, nine guys trying to f—ing write together, and keep this insanity going? Does anybody take the time to realize that? For me, this is like going to Vietnam, serving your tour and then the government asking you to do another tour because you’re a badass. We’ve got 10 purple hearts, and we’re f—ing killers. This isn’t your rock and roll; this is our rock and roll.

“This sh–’s real, it hurts, and I’ve cut myself open and given everything to this record,” he said

“The reason the fans love us is because they sense and feel something they’ve never gotten from anybody else — it’s loyalty, it’s respect and more importantly, they’ve finally found someone who feels like they feel,” he said. “We’re not your normal band. We represent something to kids they never gotten from school, or their parents, or other bands. We supply a feeling only Slipknot can supply. We have our own culture, because, we’ve done this 10 years for you, and 12 years for ourselves.”

“We have nine guys, and all nine are different,” Crahan went on. “But we’re still doing this, so I’m amazed. That’s how f—ing badass we are. Some stupid band with three members or four members wants to bellyache to me? Come on, man — this is the ‘Knot. This is nine guys, an assault on the senses, a physical war through music, and it’s going to be force-fed down your throat, and it will turn your insides out. It’s been designed to destroy you.”

Yeah, I kinda don’t know where to start…should I start from where he basically insulted each and EVERY band that’s touring with them or should I start with the war comment?

This is completely unacceptable even coming from a band like Slipknot where you should expect to feel uncomfortable with the lyrics/music that they put out.

I generally like their music, but this was just in poor taste.

don’t forget guys, this was clown that said this. hes always talking random and complete crap. plus listen to their song “get this”, theyre probly taking the approach that no one can touch them, and it may be why theyre shows are so amazing. if you think bands are better than yours it may hinder you. its just like sports, if you think theyre better, they are better

I can understand taking an approach to being the best band in the world, but you don’t hear every other band boldly state it in their interviews.

Most bands in this scene are certainly competitive for radio airplay and sales, but there are a lot of bands that tour that are friends.

What Clown basically did in that interview is alienate his band from every other band on the tour whether they’re on the mainstage or not.

I didn’t know dressing up like “dolls” and playing music that no one can understand makes you the “best band ever”!!! I am sorry but I never really have liked them and I really lost a lot of respect for them. I like bands who are humble and actually consider themselves lucky to have support and this guy acts like its a given just because they are “harder than everyone else”. Give me a break, what a joke! Every band on that Mayhem festival should drop off of it and tell them to shove it!

i wonder what his thoughts are on dirty little rabbits (shaun’s aka clown’s other band)

I like how he starts one paragraph out with

“I’m not that guy who’s going to tell you it’s harder,”

Then the next paragraph is started with

“Listen, we are the hardest ever,”

I do not think we should read too much into this, I think he was in character when he was saying all this. If this is what this guy really thinks then so be it. I am not a huge Slipknot fan but I do like their stuff. Corey Taylor is a bad ass yes and he has a really thick neck. See Made of Scars video. I think it is cool that he believes in his band this much and his art. Better than just going through the motions to sell some records and tour. The new album will do very well I am sure.

I agree with Cfw and Justin; the war comment is most especially unnecessary. it’s one thing to put yourself on a pedestal, it’s another to detract from true heroes.

Clown was the guy in the Voliminal DVD that didn’t get any camera time because he says shit like this. Sure, some of the comments are out there, but its in character (Im in agreement with saltman). Im just going to let the album speak for itself when it comes out

Anyone who wants to bitch about this interview needs to shut the hell up.

Two points i can understand…
1.) He probably shouldnt have made the comparison between their music and war, kind of disrespectful and
2.) They have no place stating they are the loyalest band out there. IF anyone, it would have to be SEVENDUST. Sevendust has been around longer, made more cds, had more diversity in their songs, made a better reputation for a live show, shown other bands that they dont have to listen to record companies, they went out and have now produced their last 3 albums themselves. And they have done all this without nearly as much popularity as slipknot. And they have never taken a break like slipknot has.

But that aside, I love this interview lol. Take into account the band, these guys are nuts. ESPECIALLY clown. I love shit talking. He doesnt necessarily have to be serious ok, and even if he is, so what? The best way to be better is to think your better. And have you listened to their music? I personally dont like much of it, too much going on. But thats the point. They have f@#$in 9 guys writing each song. So much s@#$ is going on at once and it all blends so well. I respect this band tremendously for their talents, probably the most talented band i know. But that doesnt mean i have to like their music. plus…how would u feel if you were a huge slipknot fan and he says this stuff lol. youd be so pumped.

It’s reminiscent of Oasis’ talk of the Beatles. Totally giving respect to- but at the same time, putting all other bands on notice. Not a huge Slipknot fan, but I think that this type of talk is great. Believe in what you do, and let everyone know about it. Nothing wrong with that.

That said, Led Zeppelin is the number 3 band that has ever put sound on record. Undeniable. Slipknot hasn’t and won’t, even crack the top 1000, but good for him.

I have my opinion, you have yours, I do not have to “shut the hell up”. I dont know about them being the most talented thing out there, I would have to ask for an audit on that one!

What a jackass. Disturbed is 10x better than the incredibly overrated Slipknot. Their the real headliners of this tour.

and here I thought that this was just music… boy I suppose I was wrong. I guess I better start bringing a gun into the studio and on stage to be ready for “the war”. what a joke…

yeah, I agree Mike, Disturbed is better. and I also agree w/ Justin: Jordan, it’s called freedom of speech. that’s why we have these forums, to discuss, not to tell ppl to shut up. kinda weird how you said that, yet you agree on some of our points.

Jeez, there’s smack talking and hyping your album, and then there’s this. I wasn’t sure if I would go see the Rockstar tour this summer, but I think I’ll skip it now. This clown doesn’t need my money, and I too wish Corey Taylor would put him in his place. Just about everything he said is way out of line, toward Vietnam vets, and the bands on the tour with them. Slipknot is already a pretty famous act, and they don’t need this guy running his mouth like this. Show some respect. Reminds me of an old saying:

“The higher up the ladder the monkey climbs, the more you see of his ass.”
