Van Halen And RHCP Members Form New Band

Posted on May 29th, 2008 by Mikel

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has joined forces with former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar, bassist Michael Athony and guitar legend Joe Satriani to form the new “supergroup” tentatively titled Chickenfoot. The band is expected to enter the studio sometime this Summer to record their debut album.

Hagar spoke about the project in a recent interview, “When people hear the music, it’s Led Zeppelin. It’s as good as that. I know that’s a mighty bold statement…We could rival Zep.” explained Hagar.

Red Hot Van Chili Halen Peppers. Rivaling Zeppelin in your comments about your music is instant suicide for your band. Nobody can do what Zep did and to say it’s as good is just flattering yourself in the meantime making everyone think b.s. or expecting as good as that when it most likely will not be.

Never smart when you have NOTHING out to compare yourself to anyone. But to compare youself to Zep…HA!!

Heres the surprising thing, I think they can put out something VERY SOLID. Not the next Zep by any means. That takes YEARS, and not to mention breaking new ground. The reason many ‘old’ bands(Floyd, Zep, Stones..to name a few) are/were so good is that they offered something new, and then did that for a LONG time. And not all of it was groundbreaking, nor was all of it GREAT to say the least. What made a band like Zep so good was the tallent over time. They did have a couple of those once in a lifetime(or 2 or 3 back then…MAYBE) albums that just stood the test of time. But realisticly what makes everyone like these bands is thinking of all the hits they have, the longevity of them amasses songs that stood the test of time. That SO HARD to do NOW.

If there was a chance, I wouldnt rule this out completely considering the tallent involved. Anyone that thinks this is mearly a supergroup is wrong. They are all great in their own right. Satriani is an amazing player…hes not in some awesome group, but his tallent is at a level where some lead guitarists would love to play his MISTAKES…and if they did, they would be very good at what they did still.

Im interested in this big time. Im not happy that they pulled a Zep comparison, its a bad PR move as it just sets them up for the comparisson as soon as they have even one song out. The only way this works out for them now is to really be as good as Zep was….and Ill throw this in, NOBODY is going to be comparing THIS band to just mediocre Zepplin….They just set themselves up by mentioning Zepplin, to be compared to the BEST OF Zepplin. Bad Bad move. But I believe the tallent is there….what that means remains to be seen.

I actually think they can do fairly well as long as Hagar doesn’t boast his ego too much before the album. You cannot talk up a debut album for a band as big as I am sure he will..it will do nothing but leave disappointment.

Nothing but negativity. That’s the power of rock, trying to be the best. But show some respect for the band.

I think they can make some amazing music, just don’t compare to Zep…other than that I have nothing but positive things to say and hope for out of this band!

Tempered enthusiasm. This could be really great, but I have that sinking feeling…
