iTunes Subscription To Be Limited To iPods

Posted on March 31st, 2008 by Chris

Earlier this month it was announced that Apple had begun negotiating with the big four record labels for a subscription based service. The deal would make iTunes entire music library available on users iPod and iPhone devices for a monthly fee, or a premium of up to $100 for the lifetime of the device. What wasn’t revealed until now is that any tracks purchased with the subscription would have to be downloaded onto an iPod according to VallyWag.

Apple wins by selling more iPods. Labels win with revenue and copy protection. The artists lose since their cut is expected to be smaller than they they make from single track sales.

So let me get this straight. For $100 I can download an unlimited number of songs onto my iPod from iTunes. But when my iPod gets old and stops working and I need a new one all the songs on my old iPod won’t be on iTunes for me to put on my new iPod?

Most likely. The exact pricing structure or really even the deal itself hasn’t been approved by any of the labels.

And if this happens look for the iPods to be made even cheaper.

Like the VallyWag article said, this is just Apple’s way to try and remind the labels that they make the most popular MP3 player, not Amazon

i just don’t get the subscription thing. music should not be rented. if i like some music, then i want to own it. eventually, you are going to stop the subscription. then what, your SOL.

only good thing subscriptions are good for is to listen to full albums of new artists. then if you like, you buy.

Seriously .. if the industry figured out how to make music available in cds again .. no one would be struggling. Its like buying gas as a consumer .. no one can afford it right now .. but we need it to drive. I never bought the ” I don’t have $15/$20″ to buy a CD. Thats a bunch of bs .. if you can’t afford that .. then theres a problem. If you really want something .. then you will put your money into it. Understandably generations have changed and the economy is in the toilet .. it wasn’t during Clinton’s administration (hence CDs). I know I might be biased and getting political here .. but the digital model has not been figured out and labels, producers, and everyone else are hurting and cannot figure it out. Its very simple .. you just need to put time into solving a solution in conflict vs trying to create a monopoly to benefit your own company.

If I don’t sign up for this service but still use an iPod, will the songs in my iTunes library not work if I buy a new iPod?

They should start doing multi-packs, like with DVDs at Walmart. New Sevendust is out tomorrow, so package that with something else (maybe a b-sides or a disc from another band on the label). Right now, the biggest problem with cds is that they dont offer much more than the songs and a physical copy. With all the new vinyls I buy, they almost always include a digital download. I dont think that there needs to be a drastic change, there just needs to be SOMETHING that would give a consumer incentive to pick it up.

Deuce, I hear you .. but just as singles were back out in the day .. they went away and cds came about .. now singles are coming back which ultimately puts artists in predicaments and crappy tour vans unless you multi-platinum hits. Guys I mean listen to me .. I have been through it .. the consumer controls what the industry puts out. Its based on physical cd vs digital downloading. I’m not trying to B*tch .. I’m just sick of hearing about Microsoft and Apple trying to figure out solutions with Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.. and the gambit. Its not an E-COMMERCE problem its a ARTIST INTEGRITY & MUSIC INDUSTRY problem

I agree Dave, and Im saying from a consumer’s standpoint, that if I want to spend my money, I want something more than just the songs. I like when they do the dualdisc thing that has tour diaries/behind the scenes stuff, but that has become pretty rare lately. Its too bad that more people aren’t passionate about the changes that should be made, because like you said, it’s all about the people. Apathy leads to stuff like this.

I mean think about it .. how many new artists came out and everything was dandy when CDs were out .. more and more .. today .. everything is dead .. there is no development money anymore. Once again .. I’m biased .. I still believe in the label system .. you need someone behind you to support your marketing, distribution, pr, and all that good stuff. Grass roots only goes so far. Radio stations are changing too because the industry is changing .. “New Talent” doesn’t matter anymore and it sucks majorly. It makes me as as a musician want to drop music for good .. its horrible.

Something to add about CD’s costing $15~$20. Normally as technology gets old, the price goes down. Not the case with CD’s. Prices went down some a few years ago, but they have gradually started going back up. Yeah, new releases you can usually pick up for 10 bucks or so, but the older releases are just as expensive as they were 10 years ago.

If prices were to be between 5 and 10 bucks that would help sales a lot.
