The RIAA Claims Ripping CD’s Is Piracy

Posted on December 12th, 2007 by Chris

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is at it again. In yet another lawsuit filed by the group against a couple in Arizona, they have now declared that copying a CD that you legally purchase to your computer for use on your iPod, etc. is piracy. While retarded as hell, they do bring up a good point. They claim that ripping the CD is “virtual” copyright infringement since one person ripping the CD can lead to millions of copies shared on various peer-to-peer services.

However… in a 2005 lawsuit the RIAA stated that it “is perfectly lawful to take a CD that you’ve purchased, upload it to your computer, [and] put it onto your iPod.”

I’m sorry, but if I pay 15 bucks for a CD, with the exception of ripping it and putting it on peer-to-peer sites, I’m going to do whatever I want with it.

I wonder how much of the money that they get from these lawsuits actually goes to the bands which had their songs illegally downloaded. My guess… very little… if any at all.

So are they actually suing the couple from Arizona for ripping CDs to their ipod? Or are they suing them for illegal downloading and they just made that statement about CD ripping?

Either way I’d like to see them try to win a case against CD ripping to an ipod in court… their logic will never hold up

They are suing for file sharing but decided to throw in the comment about ripping CDs in the lawsuit

Right…that makes about as much sense as a green man on a red moon. It’s all flipped sideways…

I hate the RIAA, based soley on their actions on everything. It would be different if they had anything good said about them. But no, it’l always something negative…the raio is like 1:1000.

This is discrimination against the disabled particularly. I don’t mind rippin. I have an older sister and her husband do that on DVDs, so there. I’ve made a case. This is about a case on politics. Fuck you. Live in the digi world.

You’ve got to be kidding me!?! Is the RIAA in bed with iTunes? I have to buy my music from iTunes or ripping a store-bought disc is considered illegal? Get bent. This kind of crap makes me want to loan out all of my 10,000+ songs to everyone in town. In fact, I would encourage anyone convicted of “piracy” for this B.S. to do exactly that. After all, if you’re going to do the time, you may as well ACTUALLY do the crime.
